First Kaura meet in Tanahun

Damauli, May 29: The First National Indigenous Kaura Conference kicked off here at Damauli on Saturday. The two-day conference is organised by the Nepal Magar Association.

The Kaura is a typical folk dance performed by the local community at cultural and social events and it is on the verge of disappearance these days due to the encroachment of traditional culture by modern ones.

The conference is aimed at preserving this original dance form by raising public awareness about its importance.Central president of the Association Nabin Roka Magar inaugurated the conference playing the Khaijadi (a type of cymbals) held at the open ground at Damauli.

Twenty four teams from more than 12 districts are participating in a Kaura dance competition organised as part of the conference.

The Kaura dance is believed to have originated by the Magar community at Rising Ranipokhari VDC of Tanahun district. It was originally called Kandraha dance and later came to be pronounced as Kaura, according to historians. RSS
