Nanda Bahadur Pun elected country’s second vice- president

Nanda Bahadur Pun has been elected the second Vice- President of the federal republic Nepal.
In the parliamentary election held today, UCPN (Maoist) Standing Committee member and former chief commander of People’s Liberation Army, Pun, defeated his rival candidate Amiya Kumar Yadav from the Nepali Congress by 113 votes. He garnered 325 votes against 212 of his competitor.
Out of 597 lawmakers, 547 took part in the elections.
Lawmakers associated with the Madhes-centric parties agitating in the Tarai/Madhes boycotted the vice- presidential poll. Likewise, ten votes were declared invalid.
In the parliament meeting today, Speaker Onsari Gharti announced the victory of Pun. Prior to the announcement of poll results, Election Officer and Legislature-Parliament Secretariat General Secretary Manohar Prasad Bhattarai handed the result to the Speaker.
CPN (UML) senior leader Jhalanath Khanal proposed Pun’s candidacy and Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal Chief Whip Dilnath Giri seconded it.
He was in the race for new Vice President after the promulgation of new constitution in the country as a common candidate of ruling partners. He had the support of 15 political parties including CPN (UML), UCPN(M), RPP Nepal and Madhesi Janadhikar Forum Nepal ( Democratic).
The Legislature-Parliament will meet again at 11:00 am on September 8. RSS
